Undie Sundie a Great Success! First United Methodist Church of Miami FL

http://ift.tt/eA8V8J

Ivon Peterkin gave a moving testimony about what this church means to him as a brother living on the streets of downtown Miami. Undie Sundie was the perfect time to do just that, and Ivon was brilliant as usual. He not only participates at the Breakfast Club Sunday mornings at 7:30 a.m., he also volunteers to clean the men’s bathroom after Breakfast Club every Sunday! A place he calls “A War Zone” after the Breakfast Club for all the activity from the near 200 homeless we serve every Sunday. You can get a feel for this amazing brother on the streets from our video from the Annual Foot Washing for the Homeless held this March. If you see Ivon around the church or on the streets for that matter, thank him!

#ThatsLeadership Study - James 3:14 Tuesday September 22nd 2015 First United Methodist Church of Miami

“But if you have bitter envy and selfish ambition in your hearts, do not be boastful and false to the truth.” James 3:14

  • Envy and selfishness seem to go hand in hand.
  • Most of us have fallen to these sins before and ourselves ungrateful and self-centered, which not only separates us from God but also from others.
  • James reminds us that in this situation we often stretch the truth and live into lies to make ourselves feel better.
  • Today examine your heart and the things you have said. Are they true to reality or are your stories born out of insecurity?

  • Wisdom equals gentleness and gentleness is born of wisdom.
  • Who in your life has been gentle with you? How have they shown this?
  • In what ways and with whom might you be gentle today?

Not many of you should become teachers, my brothers and sisters, for you know that we who teach will be judged with greater strictness. James 3:1

  • Whether we like it or not we are all teachers. To our friends, siblings, and children. Possibly this is why our children judge us so harshly at times? :)
  • Today examine your life and the ways in which you might need to lead by example in a more faithful way.
  • Pray for God’s strength to be a teacher with your mouth and life.

So also the tongue is a small member, yet it boasts of great exploits. James 3:5

  • The tongue is both small and powerful.
  • The tongue both blesses and curses.
  • Today pray for self-control to help you in what you speak.
  • Pray also that you might not use your tongue as a weapon of destruction but blessing.

Look at ships: though they are so large that it takes strong winds to drive them, yet they are guided by a very small rudder wherever the will of the pilot directs. James 3:4

  • Here James reminds us that often times the smallest voices, pieces, and parts control conversation, companies and committees.
  • Pray to pay attention to the small things and how they have an impact on your life.
  • Listen today also for the small voice of God that is guiding you through today.

Pastor Audrey Warren of First United Methodist Church of Miami takes on the book of James in her sermon series that's all about leadership. This week it's James 3:1-12

For all of us make many mistakes. James 3:2

  • All of us are prone to make mistakes everyday.
  • Take a moment and think about all the mistakes you made today.
  • Forgot to bring something to work, missed kissing your kid or spouse goodbye, were late to an important meeting.
  • Now take a moment and hear God say- “everyone makes mistakes.”
  • Take a moment to pray for a better tomorrow and remember you are human.

“You see that faith was active along with his works, and faith was brought to completion by the works.” James 2:22

  • Just as our muscles grow when we work them out, our faith too grows when we flex our muscles in works. Our works complete our faith.
  • Contemplate the works you have done with God and how that might grow your faith.

“You believe that God is one; you do well. Even the demons believe- and shudder.” James 2:19

  • Faith and works cannot be separated and like God they are one.
  • James reminds us that our witness is stronger when we practice both faith and works.
  • It is true that our doing for God dwells from our being in God.
  • In what ways will you find time to dwell with God today?
